BattleHack

CHICAGO

"Hungry for the Hack, Hungry for the Axe!"

June 27-28

Winners

Dozer-Tazer

David Mendez Gonzalez, Norman Usenkanov, Prasanna R Balasubramani, Ravishankar Balasubramani

Drowsy driving results in numerous fatalities in our community & beyond. Dozer-Tazer uses the smartphone’s front camera to monitor driver’s facial expressions in real time. If the app detects drowsiness, it will alert the driver (vibrate smartwatch, sound an alarm, ask questions) and text / call / email the emergency contact. The app also allows friends and family to create rewards to motivate their loved ones to drive safely.

Friends & family pledge a reward to a driver using Venmo. Dozer-Tazer stores the access_token in MongoDB. When the driver reaches the destination without dozing off (setting off the alarms), he/she can claim the pre-authorized reward. If the app helped him/her remain alert, he/she can thank Dozer-Tazer by using Braintree. The app uses Braintree's easy-to-use drop-in UI for Android - which instantly enables collecting payments through PayPal/Venmo/credit cards.

Since the app helped the driver, he/she can also choose to reciprocate by helping others. The team integrated JustGiving (which in-turn has PayPal integration) to connect him/her with a charity associated with road accident recovery.

Drowsiness detection is further enhanced by a “hardware hack”, composed by a Node.js app running Sails and Mongo on Digital Ocean, connected to an Android phone to detect events and Spark with LEDs.

grndma.io

Aaron Leon, Kyle Mattimore, Ryan Hamilton, Stephen Huh

A lovingly personalized approach to help your elderly loved ones access technology services that we young'ns take for granted.

Despite the ever increasing convenience of on-demand service applications, older generations are being left out by the inconveniences of newer technology. With grndma.io, friends and family can create a completely customized profile for their elderly loved ones with information ranging from home address to meal preferences. Utilizing this information, grndma.io dynamically generates a phone tree with interactive voice response technology to serve the user’s needs (e.g. transportation, food, laundry, groceries, etc), allowing even land line phones to access the convenience of mobile applications. To abstract the entire process in the backend server, grndma.io uses the Twilio API to handle phone communications and the Braintree API to handle payments such that otherwise inaccessible services can be as easy as the push of a button.

Think speed-dial — but for apps and services.
